General Purpose Rating is a 6 months residential course. GP Rating syllabus includes the combined study of Deck and Engineering subjects. This course will cover all aspects of the seafaring profession (Deck and Engine), which also include swimming, physical drills, workshop training, rope and mast climbing, lifesaving appliances usage, fire fighting exercises and ship visits, etc. After the training, external examinations are conducted by Board of Examination of Seafarers (BES) under D.G. Shipping (Govt. of India). In GP Rating course students will be trained in both Deck and Engine. This course ensures higher employability of the Indian seafarers in the world markets.
Qualifying in IMU-CET is mandatory for admission. Only unmarried candidates will be considered in addition with the following criteria have to be met in order to be eligible for admission intyo the B.Sc. in Nautical Science programme.
Candidate must have successfully completed the School Secondary Certificate i.e. Class X with: At least 60% marks with at least 50% marks in English from a recognized board with Mathematics and Science.
Minimum age of Candidate shall be 17.5 years, can be up to only 25 years at the time of commencement of course.
To be declared fit for selection, a candidate must be in good mental and physical health and free from any deficiency likely to interfere with the efficient performance of duties. Medically fit as per the M.S. (Medical Examination of Seafarer) rules 2000 as amended from time to time and also as per the D.G. Shipping guidelines.
Candidates for the General Purpose Rating programme must have unaided 6/6 vision in both eyes. Color blindness is not permitted. Movement of the eyeballs must be full in all direction and the pupils should react normally to light and accommodation.

General Purpose Rating is a 6 months full time programme starting twice a year i.e. every January and July.
